Penfont
Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 9, 2026
Penfont is a Mac app that turns your handwriting into a font. It is made by Insania Labs LLC and sold on the Mac App Store, on Setapp, and directly through Polar. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it.
The short version
Your photos, your pages and the fonts you make stay on your Mac. Penfont has no accounts, the app itself contains no analytics or tracking code, and it never uploads your handwriting. If you bought Penfont directly, it makes two kinds of network request, one to check your licence and one to check for updates. The Setapp version reports to Setapp how often you use it. None of these involve your handwriting.
Your handwriting
The photos you take of the template, any pages you bring in, and the fonts Penfont builds are kept in its own folder on your Mac, in Application Support, and nowhere else. Reading your handwriting is done on your Mac by Apple's Vision framework, which is part of macOS. Nothing you write or photograph is uploaded.
Fonts you export as .ttf or .woff files go wherever you save them. From that point they are ordinary files, and sharing one shares your handwriting.
No accounts, analytics or tracking
Penfont has no accounts and no sign-in. Penfont itself contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code, and its own privacy manifest declares that it collects no data. The Setapp version also includes the Setapp Framework, which tells Setapp how often you use Penfont, as described below.
When Penfont uses the network
Mac App Store version. It makes no network connections at all. It has no licence check and no update feed of its own, and its sandbox does not give it permission to use the network.
Version bought directly. It uses the network for exactly two things:
- Your licence. When you enter your key, Penfont sends it to Polar to activate it, along with Polar's organisation identifier and your Mac's name. The name labels that activation, so you can see which Macs use your key and free one. Penfont re-checks the licence with Polar every 7 days. Using it on another Mac sends the key and the activation's identifier so Polar can free this one. Your key is stored in your Mac's Keychain.
- Updates. Once a day, Penfont checks
cnyldz.com/penfont/updates/appcast.xmlfor a new version. Like any web request, this tells the server your IP address and which version of Penfont you have. It sends nothing else.
Setapp version. It has no licence key and no update check of its own: Setapp activates Penfont and keeps it up to date. It includes the Setapp Framework, which records how often you use Penfont, along with performance data such as load times and error reports, and device information such as your macOS version and Mac model. It sends this to Setapp once a day, under Setapp's privacy notice. It never includes your handwriting, your photos or your fonts.
Purchases
On the Mac App Store, purchases, refunds and updates are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. On Setapp, your membership or purchase is handled by Setapp (MacPaw) under Setapp's privacy notice. If you buy directly, Polar handles the checkout as merchant of record under Polar's privacy policy. Polar receives the email address and payment details you enter at checkout and shares your email and order with Insania Labs so we can support your purchase. Insania Labs never receives your card details.
Deleting your data
Deleting a project in Penfont deletes its photos and its font. To remove everything Penfont keeps, quit the app, delete it, and delete its folder in Application Support (for the version bought directly or through Setapp, ~/Library/Application Support/Penfont). Fonts you installed on your Mac, and files you exported yourself, stay where you put them until you remove them. To remove your Mac's name from Polar, choose Use on Another Mac in Penfont's licence window before deleting the app, or write to us.
Children
Penfont does not collect information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
